The Math Learning Center

October 25th, 2020

Hello there, everybody!
How is everybody doing? I wonder if, by the time you receive this post, the pandemic is sort of over? Or perhaps that everything has changed but… for the better? I also wonder if you are all doing well and hoping so, especially if the pandemic is still hitting. We are currently dealing with the “second wave” and teachers have it rough right now (a lot of service workers, actually, not just teachers). I’m thinking of all of you and wishing you all the best!

Last week, I “went” to the QPAT conference and it was quite fun! Starting with this one and for a few months, I think the websites I’ve discovered from them will be talked about here:

What is it?

The Math Learning Center is a great place for teaching or manipulating mathematical concepts from the preschool level to the high school level.  Math Learning CenterYou can find out more about them on their About page by following this link.

What does it offer?

MLC Lessons and PublicationsIt offers many resources for teachers who need to teach online (but also for math teachers who feel like they need more professional development) and also for parents who need to teach at home and find themselves without materials.

They provide PDF books which are free as of the writing of this particular post, and it is quite interesting to go through (the page is even called free lessons from their resources section, come on! You wouldn’t think it gets better than that but it does…).

Ideal for online teaching, which we have all been experiencing I am CERTAIN due to the pandemic, you can have access to  free apps for smart devices (whether they need Google Play or the Apple App Store) or even just from the web browser, which is what I usually use.

You will notice the mention: “Supports Sharing!” on top of the apps and this means that you can share the “problem” that you’ve made for the students to them and the students can send a link back when they’ve successfully solved the issue. This is a nice way to give your students access to an interactive homework, and it is very interesting. From manipulating coins to ordering numbers on a numerical line, I think there are a lot of activities you can do when online teaching, and I highly recommend using these.

Landing Page - Virtual Learning SeriesI want to thank EdTechTeamCanada, who presented these tools at QPAT in 2020, because I think this was an amazing find and I can’t wait to find out more. Please consider taking a look at their website!

All right, I’m gonna take my leave now,
Have a great month everybody and “see” you next time!
